Take your pick: schools, hospitals, parks, roads, urban sprawl, police force, judicial system, water and sanitation systems, and many other choices. Anything that is impacted as a result of having a lot of people rely on it, is impacted to an even greater degree by illegal aliens because they generally aren’t paying for any of it. One of the most common comments from Americans regarding the May 1, 2006 boycott was how much less traffic was on the highways in cities where the largest boycotts occurred.

The basic problem with immigration of today is it is not your grandparents’ immigration. As noted by Steven Malanga in "How Unskilled Immigrants Hurt Our Economy":

“…Since the mid-1960s, America has welcomed nearly 30 million legal immigrants and received perhaps another 15 million illegals, numbers unprecedented in our history. These immigrants have picked our fruit, cleaned our homes, cut our grass, worked in our factories, and washed our cars. But they have also crowded into our hospital emergency rooms, schools, and government-subsidize d aid programs, sparking a fierce debate about their contributions to our society and the costs they impose on it.

...these workers add little to our economy, they come at great cost, because they are not economic abstractions but human beings, with their own culture and ideas—often at odds with our own. Increasing numbers of them arrive with little education and none of the skills necessary to succeed in a modern economy. Many may wind up stuck on our lowest economic rungs, where they will rely on something that immigrants of other generations didn’t have: a vast U.S. welfare and social-services apparatus that has enormously amplified the cost of immigration. Just as welfare reform and other policies are helping to shrink America’s underclass by weaning people off such social programs, we are importing a new, foreign-born underclass. As famed free-market economist, the late Milton Friedman put it: “It’s just obvious that you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.”

…Hampering today’s immigration debate are our misconceptions about the so-called first great migration some 100 years ago, with which today’s immigration is often compared. We envision that first great migration as a time when multitudes of Emma Lazarus’s “tired,” “poor,” and “wretched refuse” of Europe’s shores made their way from destitution to American opportunity.

social programs of the Great Society than the native-born population, says Harvard economist Borjas, suggests that welfare and other social programs are a magnet drawing certain types of immigrants - nonworking women, children, and the elderly - and keeping them here when they run into difficulty.

Almost certainly, immigrants’ participation in our social welfare programs will increase over time, because so many are destined to struggle in our workforce. Despite our cherished view of immigrants as rapidly climbing the economic ladder, more and more of the new arrivals and their children face a lifetime of economic disadvantage, because they arrive here with low levels of education and with few work skills—shortcomings not easily overcome.”

FSM strongly suggests you read the entire article.

A significant portion of rising health premiums is due to subsidizing the medical costs of uninsured illegal aliens.

As detailed in Illegal aliens threaten U.S. medical system between 1993 and 2003, 60 California hospitals closed because half their services were unpaid. Another 24 California hospitals are on the verge of closure. Both PA and NJ hospitals recently reported that they provided almost $2 billion in free emergency and short term care services, in large part to illegal aliens. Minnesota county commissioners say that the cost of medical care for uninsured immigrants is too high for local governments to bear and they expect a $4.2 billion budget shortfall over the next two years. NC has about $1.4 billion in un-reimbursed hospital expenses annually. The Texas Hospital Association directly spent $393 million treating illegal aliens in 2002. One third of the patients treated by the LA County Health System are illegal aliens and the system is facing a $300 million deficient. In AZ, the Southeast Arizona Medical Center had a $1 billion shortfall and recently filled for bankruptcy.

C’mon America…this is YOUR problem and only YOU can clean it up. Your elected officials will not do this unless you tell them to. Go here to register your complaint. Your thoughts matter.

…”Because so much of our legal and illegal immigrant labor is concentrated in such fringe, low-wage employment, its overall impact on our economy is extremely small. A 1997 National Academy of Sciences study estimated that immigration’s net benefit to the American economy raises the average income of the native-born by only some $10 billion a year - about $120 per household. And that meager contribution is not the result of immigrants helping to build our essential industries or making us more competitive globally but instead merely delivering our pizzas and cutting our grass. Estimates by pro-immigration forces that foreign workers contribute much more to the economy, boosting annual gross domestic product by hundreds of billions of dollars, generally just tally what immigrants earn here, while ignoring the offsetting effect they have on the wages of native-born workers.

If the benefits of the current generation of migrants are small, the costs are large and growing because of America’s vast range of social programs and the wide advocacy network that strives to hook low-earning legal and illegal immigrants into these programs. A 1998 National Academy of Sciences study found that more than 30 percent of California’s foreign-born were on Medicaid—including 37 percent of all Hispanic households - compared with 14 percent of native-born households. The foreign-born were more than twice as likely as the native-born to be on welfare, and their children were nearly five times as likely to be in means-tested government lunch programs. Native-born households pay for much of this, the study found, because they earn more and pay higher taxes - and are more likely to comply with tax laws. Recent immigrants, by contrast, have much lower levels of income and tax compliance   (another study estimated that only 56 percent of illegals in California have taxes deducted from their earnings, for instance). The study’s conclusion: immigrant families cost each native-born household in California an additional $1,200 a year in taxes.

Immigration’s bottom line has shifted so sharply that in a high-immigration state like California, native-born residents are paying up to ten times more in state and local taxes than immigrants generate in economic benefits. Moreover, the cost is only likely to grow as the foreign-born population - which has already mushroomed from about 9 percent of the U.S. population when the NAS studies were done in the late 1990s to about 12 percent today – keeps growing. And citizens in more and more places will feel the bite, as immigrants move beyond their traditional settling places. From 1990 to 2005, the number of states in which immigrants make up at least 5 percent of the population nearly doubled from 17 to 29, with states like Arkansas, South Dakota, South Carolina, and Georgia seeing the most growth. This sharp turnaround since the 1970s, when immigrants were less likely to be using the social programs of the Great Society than the nat

But that argument distorts the realities of the first great migration. Though fleeing persecution or economic stagnation in their homelands, that era’s immigrants - Jewish tailors and seamstresses who helped create New York’s garment industry, Italian stonemasons and bricklayers who helped build some of our greatest buildings, German merchants, shopkeepers, and artisans - all brought important skills with them that fit easily into the American economy. Those waves of immigrants - many of them urban dwellers who crossed a continent and an ocean to get here - helped supercharge the workforce at a time when the country was going through a transformative economic expansion that craved new workers, especially in its cities

…Many of these immigrants quickly found a place in our economy, participating in the workforce at a higher rate even than the native population. Their success at finding work sent many of them quickly up the economic ladder: those who stayed in America for at least 15 years, for instance, were just as likely to own their own business as native-born workers of the same age, one study found. Another study found that their American-born children were just as likely to be accountants, engineers, or lawyers as Americans whose families had been here for generations.”

What the newcomers of the great migration did not find here was a vast social-services and welfare state. They had to rely on their own resources or those of friends, relatives, or private, often ethnic, charities if things did not go well.

….The flood of immigrants, both legal and illegal, from countries with poor, ill-educated populations, has yielded a mismatch between today’s immigrants and the American economy and has left many workers poorly positioned to succeed for the long term. Unlike the immigrants of 100 years ago, whose skills reflected or surpassed those of the native workforce at the time, many of today’s arrivals, particularly the more than half who now come from Central and South America, are farmworkers in their home countries who come here with little education or even basic training in blue-collar occupations like carpentry or machinery.”

What do these towns have in common: Escondido   (CA), Farmers Branch   (TX), Hazleton   (PA) Riverside   (NJ) and Valley Park   (MO)?They are among the cities and counties nationwide that have proposed or enacted local ordinances that bar landlords from renting to illegal immigrants, penalize businesses that hire them or train their police force to enforce federal immigration laws – and they all have been targeted by the ACLU, civil rights activists and business groups seeking to drive up the legal costs of defending the ordinances in court so high that town officials knuckle under.

The strategy worked in the case of Escondido, reports The Washington Post:

Escondido abandoned an ordinance that would punish landlords who rent to illegal immigrants after it discovered the legal bills could top $1 million. By the time the City Council agreed in December to settle a lawsuit challenging the ordinance, Escondido had spent $200,000, spokeswoman Joyce Masterson said.

When Farmers Branch prohibited landlords from renting apartments to illegal immigrants last fall, the town was slapped with four separate lawsuits challenging the ordinance. As of March, $262,000 has been spent on legal fees and court costs – mostly taxpayer money.

No taxpayer money is being spent to defend Hazleton’s ordinance banning landlords from renting to illegal immigrants, as the town has received $266,000 from thousands of donors around the country. Mayor Lou Barletta tells the WaPo that if Hazleton loses in court, the town could be ordered to pay the plaintiffs’ court costs, which could total as much as $2 million.

So far, Farmers Branch and Hazleton are not backing down. Tim O'Hare, the Farmers Branch councilman who spearheaded the ordinance, says the town’s insurance policy should cover the costs of two of the lawsuits: "Any thought that they can spend us into giving up or quitting is wrong," he tells the WaPo. For his part, Barletta says: "I'm sure the ACLU, part of their goal would be to run the city out of money in hopes that we would stop fighting, but I will raise whatever I have to."

Editorial Note: These towns need all the help they can get to fight their well-funded opponents in court. After complaints from the National Institute for Latino Policy, CNN removed a link on Lou Dobbs’ Web site to Small Town Defenders, which Hazleton has set up to collect private donations. The Stiletto doesn’t answer to CNN, so she is providing the link here - as well as a link to another group raising money to help small towns defend themselves in court, Mountain States Legal Foundation.

NOTE: In case I did not put all the links in correctly plea

You ain't the biggest fish in the sea.

When the firemen came in with their tyrant behaviour about the Storm Water Utility Fee, is when the finance director called the IRS to find out about the compensation on the free water, sewer and trash. That is when they found out the city was in error of not 1099 the volunteers for compensation. So why didn't Lynda Ryan ever check on this? Nothing was shoved in anyone's face, it was a mistake in the 70s when the fire department came over and took a stand on receiving something for all they do. Then there was a cap on the free water. Then in the 80s a group came back over to city hall and demanded more; free water, trash and sewer. That is when they   (whoever made the offer) should have done a little research on this issue so the city would not have been in such a mess on this issue and the volunteers would not be facing it now. Question; Now that those that have received the gift of help are you prepared to receive your 1099 in 2008? And for those that didn't receive the gift of help, did they inform you or advise you of the records you can keep to help compensate for the compensation you have received?

The people do support our volunteers, but you have more or less told us that it is "up ours, and what would we do if we had to pay for a Fire Department"

That sounds like a threat to the citizens.

Real professional!!!! What about that oath you took?

Everyone in the city who has a water meter is being charged that fee, it was discussed for months before it was implemented. WHY didn't Jimmy Burnett think to check with the CM then about it? He didn't because he knew if the trio could get elected, he was going to get the CM job!!!

All I heard from the meetings I saw on tv about the fee from the FF was "we don't care about the fee, we will pay if thats what the city wants", well, it appears thats what they want, so pay and quit bringing it up!!!!!!!!

you just verified exactly what i said pereviously, when they came in about the storm water utility fee is when the finance director checked with the IRS. who do you think gave that direction? the mayor and his croanies thats who! it was a pay back. and if you looked at the minutes or at the word for word speeches rog has put on here by the firemen, it was not about the fee but the fact that outz was not a big enough man to go and talk to them himself or have the city manager go and talk to them.

That type of thinking that runs out people that don't care about the 1099's.

We ain't the only city that had to deal with it. The problem is when the city council members and other delagtes.

Teen Charged With Killing Girlfriend's Baby
(CBS/AP) MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. A teenage day laborer from Guatemala was charged Wednesday with beating to death his girlfriend's three-month-old daughter.

New Jersey Transit Police arrested Randy Lopez-Rivas Wednesday afternoon as he was walking near the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, police said. He was charged with murder.

Lopez-Rivas had disappeared from his Vineland apartment before his girlfriend, Guillermina Matias-Lopez came home to work and realized her baby was missing.

The baby was found later in a garbage bag behind a clothes washer in the basement of the house where the couple was renting an apartment.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Ronald Casella said baby's 21-year-old mother, Guillermina Matias-Lopez, left home at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday to go to work.

She left the girl, Kimberly Lopez-Rivas, with Lopez-Rivas, who was not the baby's father.

Casella said Lopez-Rivas turned up alone at the nearby home of a woman who often took care of the infant and asked for a ride to the bus station, where he hopped onto a Philadelphia-bound bus. Authorities wondered if he would try to leave the country, or perhaps head to Boston, where he has relatives.

Investigators were trying to figure out whether that raised any alarms with the sitter and whether she asked about the baby's whereabouts, Casella said.

When Matias-Lopez arrived at the baby-sitter's house around 7:45 p.m., she was alarmed that her child was not there, Casella said. She could not find the infant at home, either.

At 11 p.m., after more than two hours of searching, police found the baby behind the washing machine.

Authorities believed the baby, who had a thick thatch of black hair, was beaten to death. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday.

In an arrest warrant issued Wednesday, he was charged with murder.

They don't know why Lopez-Rivas, a wiry 5'8" man with a wisp of a mustache, would have struck the baby. He has previously been arrested on charges of burglary and theft.

I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut up already.
I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA.
I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one?
I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry rear if you're running from them..
I also think they have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.
And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my drivers license. I think it's good..... and I'm proud that "God" is written on my money.
I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.
I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making "donations" to their cause.
I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents.
And what is going on with gas prices... again?
I believe "illegal" is illegal no matter what the lawyers think.
I believe the American flag should be the only one allowed in AMERICA!
If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.
If you are a BAD American too, please forward this to everyone you know.
    We want our country

This city is not going to tolerate these things any longer. I think the big turnout showed the people are ready for a change. I'm voting on June 16 and it won't be for Miller.

Me thinks you protest a little too much.
Me thinks that you would look for any excuse to cover Sue's butt on this.

The meeting was 5/25/06, there was plenty of time to call a special meeting or just put it on a regular council meeting agenda and have it voted on.

I don't think the council would have turned it down. I dont' think that anyone disagrees that the city should make right what was the city's mistake.

Why didn't someone in finance catch it before?

Lets see Nolan says let people do their jobs. Is there anything wrong with it doing properly instead of getting the city in deeper.

To accuse anyone of not supporting the VFD or the Police Department is ludicrious.

But to claim in was an emergency situation is not true, there was plenty of time to finish the business that was started on 5/25/06.

Then to throw up in our faces that the volunteers would march into a council meeting and quit. Another threat to the CITIZENS.

No matter what this community will pull together it has proven that time after time when it comes to emergency situations.

So it is not the fact that a wrong needed to be fixed, the fact is a wrong was done to fix a wrong.

For years it was working just fine THEN OUZTS HAD TO SCREW WITH IT. If you giving them a free bill, then give it all, don't start sending a portion of a bill or a tax or a fee. Ouzts did it on purpose. They don't get a bill or they do.

I would quit too if I was a volunteer and had the adians and other ouzties givening me crap. Anyone griping   (after all these years) that they get free water is just cuz the mayor has a burr up his butt.
