Public Vote In Favor of Banning Apartment Rentals To Illegal Immigrants In TX Town May 14, 2007 9:35 a.m. EST Mary K. Brunskill - AHN Staff Writer Farmer's Branch, TX (AHN) - A public vote in a Dallas, TX, suburb on Saturday was the first in the U.S. that decided to ban landlords from renting to the majority of illegal immigrants. Sixty-eight percent of Farmers Branch voters approved the ban while 32 percent voted against it in final, unofficial returns. Under the ordinance, apartment managers cannot rent out apartments without first verifying that the renters are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants. Those caught violating the law would be forced to pay a fine of up to $500. AP reports Tim O'Hare, a City Council member in favor of the ordinance, said, "It says especially to Congress that we're tired of the out-of-control illegal immigration problem. That if Congress doesn't do something about it, cities will." There are some exceptions to the ordinance pertaining to minors, senior citizens and some families with a mix of legal residents and illegal immigrants. Opponents of the ordinance say they will take the issue to court and are fighting for a restraining order against it. They say it is discriminatory and that landlords should not be forced to take on the role of federal immigration officers.
| Comments:| | oh give me a break ok if you want to point fingers then i can come back and say that it took outz and his croanies at least 5 years to screw this town up, it won't get fixed in 1 year! 17.05.07 15:13 Pass dat shit nigga Hey, I am black and we say that in all of our rap songs. 17.05.07 15:11 Nolan Besides Ron, have you not heard or read, I myself am not White... Funny how some here jump and twist most everything to whatever suits their fancy.... He did it, so I did it too.... Very immature and self serving I think... 17.05.07 14:52 Whatever!!!!! You must not get out much... You must not watch or listen to any Black Films or music. It may be a poor attempt at youth humor (13 to 30), but if it is racist there are Millions of Black/other races in America and around the world who are racist as well. I guess you could not think of a way to address the main body of my posting, so you try to make the poster out as a racist ...... 17.05.07 14:46 Ronald A. White [url] Now, This sounds racist to me, how about you? Quote: Nolan Ok! Pass that shit nigger ..... I know my writing skills suck, but your reading skills are not anything to brag about.
17.05.07 14:07 Nolan to do their jobs 17.05.07 11:22 Nolan Nice to see you Ron, are ready to work toward the positive for our city and it’s citizens. Even if those you did not vote for were elected to office, you are ready to work with our elected officials and not be a part of a continued negativity that has brought our city down for so many, many years. Yes, yes... what a example of good citizen ship you are. How about you file your charges and allow the appointed officials to do their jobs, if there is any truth to your charges I am sure they will be addressed. No need for you or any one else to continue to interfere Legally Elected Officials from being able to perform their elected duties. I looked very carefully at my last few election ballots, I did not see your name under the ‘Superintendent’ of our city affairs or our elected officials. Please keep up your good works, but please, PLEASE allow our city officials and our elected officials to their jobs. 17.05.07 11:20 Ronald A. White [url] Who can answer these questions, intelligently 1. What is the law in Texas regarding anonymous and cash donations given to, and accepted by, candidates for an elected position 2. What is the law in Texas regarding the removal of opponents political yard signs 3. What is the law in Texas regarding council members meeting and making decisions concerning city business 4. What is the wording in our City Charter regarding City Council members directing city staff 17.05.07 10:57 Nolan PS.. We voted for Sue in the last election, and we will continue to support & VOTE FOR HER in the upcoming election. 17.05.07 10:47 Nolan Ok! Pass that shit nigger..... I know my writing skills suck, but your reading skills are not anything to brag about. I am not Harvey Hammond, who worked for the recall(longer than Marla or I did) and then switched teams. I am a citizen of America, who pays taxes and lives in White Settlement Texas. I did not vote for Jimmy Carter, but I did not want him or his administration to fail. That would mean I would want American and Americans to fail. The same is true here. I do not wish to be James O or John T or Gunnar friend, but I expect them to represent me as well as all of those who did vote for them and I wish them success. I hope to continue being friends with Sue, Don, Gary, Pete, even though we disagree and some issues. 17.05.07 10:41 resident What I wonder is why you and others would bash candidates who you opposed, and now that they get elected(by a landslide as stated in the Star Telegram), you want to act like they are your friend? Quote: 2287 Name: Nolan 13 May 2007 06:20 Congratulation to James O and John T. I truly wish you both well. Congratulation to Todd & Randy, good luck to you both....
Did you already jump the fence there Nolan? 17.05.07 09:40 Nolan Citizen: Wow Nolan, Isn't this a swithch. What switch? I wrote a letter to the editor in the Grizzly over 3 months ago asking for New Independent Leadership. Nothing really new there. We must all (citizens, as well as city leaders) need to work hard to improve the way our city politics, and city operation are perceived by businesses and the public in general who are watching us from outside of our city. Political leaders could start by showing that regardless of who voted for them, they are working together for the best interest of our city and all of it’s legal tax paying citizens, “weather the citizens voted for them or not”. Citizens can start by not making a mockery of our city meetings, mostly our city council meetings which have became a JOKE (NOT FUNNY, BUT SAD). We must start some where, I was hoping my recent postings would help in starting positive changes. Starting with myself and asking others to do the same. JUST TRY........... 17.05.07 09:22 resident I also remember that you TRIED to drag that issue up and on for 2 years now, and it appears that the people of this DON'T listen to your bullshit!!!! 17.05.07 08:31 LET'S SEE NOW WHAT OTHER ELECTED OFFICIAL WASTED OUR MONEY AND TIME ON AN ELECTION THAT A EVEN MORE RESOUNDING NUMBER OF THE CICIZENS "DID NOT" SUPPORT? THAT WOULD BE OUTZ!! YOU DO REMEMBER THE NAME CHANGE DON'T YOU? 17.05.07 08:01 resident You know, I was speaking to a very popular scholl board member this week, and even he thought we were in bad shape! He said that most cities want a council can agree and the vote should be 5-0 most of the time and not 3-2, in his words, "thats a council who is united". so when you critize the past council for always voting 5-0 and you say they were doing so because they did whatever so and so told them, it appears they were UNITED, something this council hasn't been for 11 months. 17.05.07 07:52 Citizen Wow Nolan, Isn't this a swithch. For over two years nearly you and your devotees have villified and mispresented the issues here in this city. From 04' thur '06 we had a united city council and they had begun to move this city forward, no arguing, no breaking of laws, bringing in viable new businesses, and cleaning up the town. But you sir had a personal vendetta against the mayor and tore help tear this city apart with this web site and your personal attacks on the mayor and then city council. It all boils down to this, the majority of the people in this city like our mayor and have come out and voted. Maybe you, Sue, Don , and Gary should take you own advice and start working together, instead of your persoanl attacks, lies, and distorting the facts and maybe we can work to save our town. You are right about one though, we must stop the in fighting and work together on the future of WS regardless of who is mayor or on the council. 17.05.07 07:36 Nolan NO ONE HAS ANY RIGHT TO POINT FINGERS, AT SOMEONE ELSE FOR THE WAY OUR CITIES POLITICS ARE SEEN BY OUTSIDERS.. CERTAINLY NOT RON, or I. Stop already with the “Lookie, lookie, what they did” crap. Our city did not find itself in the mess we face just because of the action of Sue, Don and Gary. When I wrote my article asking for New Independent Leadership, I meant someone who could represent all of our citizens, “NOT” anyone from the two feuding parties that have been changing power over, over, and over again. Enough of this endless power struggle, where the only real loser is WS citizens and our city. I said long before this last election and it is just as true today. Everyone should put your petty, selfish crap behind us and work to make things better for everyone (legal tax paying citizen), no one likes it when they have a handful of people force their views of what is best for the Majority, NO MATTER WHO IT IS DOING THE FORCING. Pray for our city and it’s leaders, because their success in our success. Everyone ‘Do the right thing’ and ‘work together’........... .. 17.05.07 01:07 Ronald A. White [url] Yes I am pointing my finger. Pointing it directly at the three individuals who said they were going to adress the flood issue and help bring new businesses to town. One year later, what have they done? Ignored the citizens of this community and played patty cake with two used car dealers. Now you tell me, how have you benefited from that? One whole year amd absolutely nothing done, BUT, use their position and city funds to push for a law suite and a recall vote the MAJORITY of voters did not support. So yes I am pointing my finger straight at them. They have failed miserably, side stepping the law along the way. Is that the kind of "city leaders" YOU want? 16.05.07 23:41 oh give me a break there you go mr. white, pointing the finger. why not read nolan's post a little clearer and stop pointing the finger. 16.05.07 22:31 Ronald A. White [url] Right On Nolan. QUESTION? Why did Sue, Don and Garry spend ALL THEIR TIME this past year, (starting in May when they were seated on the council), PUSHING FOR A USED CAR DEALERSHIP? What happened with the Economic development, bringing in NEW BUSINESSES, and WORKING ON FLOOD CONTROL? 16.05.07 20:37 Nolan White Settlement, could not be a bigger Joke if we tried! Everyone around us are ‘boom towns’, and we can not pay Companies enough to locate here. That is everyone’s fault “perhaps”, but no one here, or at our council meetings (THOSE IN THE CROWD) can point the finger at anyone else. The Election is over! Anyone notice our city is still largely a Ghost Town and Crime is High? When you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you should do is “stop digging”! 16.05.07 17:01 Nolan DEBAR, Macedonia - Three Muslim brothers who allegedly helped plot to kill soldiers at a U.S. Army base have roots in one of Europe’s most pro-American corners - a region that remains grateful to the United States for ending the Kosovo war. Dritan Duka, 28, Shain Duka, 26, and Eljvir Duka, 23, who were arrested in New Jersey this week in what U.S. authorities said was a bungled scheme to blow up and gun down soldiers at Fort Dix, were born in Debar, a remote town on Macedonia’s rugged border with Serbia’s Kosovo province. 30% of illegal are OTMN (Other than Mexican Nationals) I thought you Ron, where all about the Word of Law? 16.05.07 16:49 good ole boy that is going to look real nice in the headlines if WHITE Settlement is trying to do like Farmers Branch...That would definitely make national headlines....Ronald White is right about focusing on issues that truly matter in the town.... 15.05.07 22:34 Anonymous no but we can make a start here the same way farmers branch made a start in their city. 15.05.07 20:07 Ronald A. White [url] Nolan, I agree with you on the Illegal Immigrants issue. I do not agree that ALL illegal immagrants are Hispanic, nor do I agree that ALL Hispanics are illegal immigrants. I do AGREE that illegal immigrants are of many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. While officing at the Federal Court House on 10th and Lamarr in Fort Worth,I saw first hand many many naturalization ceremonies, some conducted by the Honorable Jimm Wright. Illegal Immigration is a problem in this country. Period. However, there are many problems here in White Settlement as you well know. Why can't you direct your passion to those problems? Problems such as drug issues in our town. Problems such as burglaries vandalism in our town. Problems such as continued numerous city ordinance violations in our town. We can't solve the immigration problems here, but we can address our local issues and hopefully make a difference. 15.05.07 10:40 Nolan Both political parties must get serious about illegal immigration enforcement Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid clearly is playing a bit of politics concerning proposals to reform immigration laws. He recently set a deadline of today to begin Senate debate on the issue. Reid, D-Nev., hopes to portray Democrats as leaders in immigration reform and to portray President Bush and Republicans in Congress as laggards. He issued his ultimatum because the White House has not yet been able to craft a new immigration proposal that may pacify all the special interests lobbying for various provisions. We don’t know how that can be done, frankly. Bush himself apparently still stubbornly favors some sort of “amnesty” that would allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the United States. That flies in the face of the opinions of many Americans, who want true enforcement of immigration laws. Any such “amnesty” program should continue to face fierce resistance among lawmakers, who would be backed by a majority of Americans. What Reid isn’t saying is that some Democrats agree with the president. Still, Reid is correct in demanding that debate begin on the issue. It’s time for all concerned — and that includes both Republicans and Democrats — to tackle the problem. The Minot Daily News: Jim Eykyn, Publisher, Bryan L. Obenchain, Editor 15.05.07 09:50 |
